Since the 1970s, as knowledge and attitudes change, the Ontario government has been steadily closing its residential facilities and today, more than 40,000 adults with a developmental disability live, work and participate in their communities, experience college life, and participate in a variety of field placement opportunities. These opportunities can lead to volunteer, part-time or full-time work with a variety of employers.
The Community Integration through Co-operative Education program provides adults with developmental disabilities the opportunity to experience college life. You will have the opportunity to acquire skills you can use at college, work, home, and in the community.
The goals of the program are to support students to:
The CICE program offers both integrated and segregated learning opportunities. Classes with peers from the CICE program focus on developing independent skills in areas such as writing, basic mathematics, communications, life skills and human relations.
Students will also participate in a number of courses from a wide range of vocational areas. These courses are called electives and students will participate in these classes with peers from other college programs. Some of the electives are: Photography, Hospitality, Broadcasting - Radio, Tourism Management, Journalism, Landscape Technician, Business and Police Foundations. The CICE integration facilitator adapts the elective courses so that students can participate to the best of their ability. Depending on availability and time, students will take one to three electives each semester.
Beginning in semester two, students will have an opportunity to participate in a field placement, which gives them work experience either on or off campus.
Note: Students must be able to arrange for their own transportation to and from Humber and from one campus to another (if applicable)
The 2009/2010 fee for two semesters is
- domestic $3,052.70
- international $11,730.
Note: Students are eligible to apply for the Ontario Special Needs Bursary. They will receive the application form once they have been accepted into the program. Students are not encouraged to apply for OSAP for this program.
