Graphic design is one of the six design disciplines clustered in Toronto fuelling the city's reputation for innovation and creativity. Work as a graphic designer, web designer, project manager, and junior art director. Put your creative talents to good use in multimedia houses, design studios, graphic design departments of major corporations, advertising agencies and publishing houses. Graduates are also successful with their own businesses.
Humber's program provides training in graphic applications for both print design and web development. Using project-based instruction, the hands-on curriculum examines some of the industry's most widely used software applications. The program is conducted in four parts. At first, students learn the Macintosh operating system and main print design software applications: Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign. Students are introduced to general design theory and typographic design. The second section presents complex technical issues related to print design and production, culminating in a field trip to print houses for a first-hand look at press runs.
With a reasonable working knowledge of the main applications, students tackle more elaborate design challenges in the third stage - designing for a favourite magazine, developing an on-the-shelf box package, creating an online portfolio website. Using HTML, Dreamweaver and Flash, students take their initial web designs and develop a fully functioning website showcasing their course projects and web design skills. The final part of the program prepares students for their portfolio presentation and future employment opportunities.
Note: Application for this program is made directly to the Digital Imaging Training Centre and not to ontariocolleges.ca. There is no application fee.
